Electrical work for landscape lighting transformer installation in Central Virginia

Outdoor Lighting Built to Last

Quality outdoor lighting changes the way a home feels after dark. Path lights guide guests safely. Tree uplighting creates depth and drama. Security lighting deters trespass. Holiday lighting infrastructure makes seasonal display effortless. HOLISTIQ Building Systems and Services LLC designs and installs landscape lighting systems that survive the freeze-thaw cycles, summer humidity, and storm exposure that wreck cheap big-box lighting kits within a few years.

What separates a HOLISTIQ landscape install from a kit you assemble yourself is the wiring. Low-voltage transformers sized for the actual load with 20% headroom for future additions. Direct-burial UF-B cable rather than the lamp cord that ships with kits. Properly waterproofed connections at every fixture instead of pierced wire splice nuts. Brass or solid copper fixtures that develop a patina over the years rather than plastic that cracks in the second winter. The result is a lighting system that looks intentional from day one and keeps working for ten or fifteen years.

Josh Smith handles landscape lighting personally and approaches it as part of the home’s overall electrical and ventilation system. The transformer location, the GFCI protection, the conduit penetration through the foundation, the integration with smart-home scenes, all coordinated with the rest of the electrical work. For new construction or a major renovation, landscape lighting is pre-wired during framing and the cost is a fraction of retrofit pricing. For existing homes, we trench, drop conduit through the basement or crawlspace, and minimize disruption to the yard.

Most homeowners contact HOLISTIQ for one of three lighting goals: a complete property design with path, accent, and entertainment lighting; a focused upgrade for a deck or pool entertainment zone; or holiday lighting infrastructure (dedicated outdoor outlets on automated circuits) so seasonal display setup goes from a weekend project to plugging in a tree. We handle all three, plus the security lighting layer that homeowners often add later.

Landscape Lighting Services

Path and Walkway Lighting

Low-voltage path lights that mark walkways, steps, and entry routes. Brass and solid copper fixtures rated for direct-burial transformers. Bulb spacing planned around the actual path geometry rather than dropped on a fence post pattern. Fixtures aimed to light the path, not blind the guest.

Tree Uplighting and Accent

Well-mounted or grade-mounted uplights aimed at signature trees, architectural features, water elements, and stone walls. Beam spread, color temperature, and lumens chosen for the specific feature. Fixtures placed where they’re protected from mowers and snow blowers, with cable runs designed for future fixture additions.

Security and Motion Lighting

Perimeter security lights with motion sensors, dusk-to-dawn photocells, and smart control integration. Driveway and side-yard coverage planned around how the property is actually approached. Light pools placed where someone trying to hide would rather not stand.

Deck, Patio, and Entertainment Areas

Recessed deck lights, step lights, post-cap fixtures, string-light infrastructure (dedicated outdoor outlets on smart-controlled circuits), and pool or hot-tub area lighting. Wired so seasonal swaps are plug-and-play and the entertainment area looks complete after dark.

Holiday Lighting Infrastructure

Dedicated outdoor outlets on the eaves, on the porch, in the trees, on automated dawn-dusk or scheduled circuits. Once installed, holiday display becomes plug, plug, plug. No more extension cords running from a kitchen window across the yard. The infrastructure pays back the first season.

Smart and Color-Tunable Systems

If your home is on a Lutron, HomeKit, or Home Assistant platform, landscape lighting integrates with the same scenes you use indoors. Vacation mode, dawn-dusk automation, scenes for entertainment, and color-tunable RGBW where appropriate. See our smart home electrical page for full integration details.

Landscape Lighting Process

  1. 01

    Evening Site Walk

Josh walks the property at dusk so we can both see what the existing lighting actually does and what the property looks like with no light. We discuss your priorities (security, beauty, entertainment, holiday) and where you most want light to fall. Site walks are free and usually take 45 to 60 minutes.

  2. 02

    Lighting Plan and Quote

Within 48 hours you receive a lighting plan: fixture types, locations, beam spreads, transformer location and sizing, smart-control integration, and a written itemized quote. The plan is broken into phases if you want to install path and security first, then add accent and entertainment later.

  3. 03

    Trenching, Wiring, and Install

Trenching for cable runs, direct-burial UF-B cable in conduit where required, GFCI-protected transformer installed in a dry location, and waterproof connections at every fixture. We coordinate with landscaping crews if the install is part of a larger yard project. Yard restoration is included so the lawn looks the same after install.

  4. 04

    Aim, Adjust, Document

Final fixture aim happens at dusk with you on site, since aim is the difference between landscape lighting that looks intentional and lighting that looks like it was dropped from a truck. Smart-control scenes are programmed and labeled. You receive a fixture map showing every cable run and connection for future maintenance. Visit our gallery for completed landscape lighting examples.

Landscape Lighting FAQs

How long do landscape lighting systems last?
A properly designed and installed system with brass or solid copper fixtures, direct-burial cable, and a quality transformer should last 12 to 20 years with routine bulb replacements (or longer with LED fixtures, which often last the full life of the system). Cheap big-box kits with plastic fixtures and lamp-cord wiring typically fail in 2 to 4 years. The materials cost more upfront but cost dramatically less over the life of the system.
Are landscape lights safe in winter weather?
Yes, when installed correctly. Low-voltage systems carry 12 to 15 volts at the fixture, which is safe even when fixtures are submerged in melting snow or ice. The transformer is GFCI-protected and the connections at every fixture are waterproof. Heaving from freeze-thaw can shift fixtures over time, which is why we revisit aim during the spring as part of optional annual maintenance.
How much does a landscape lighting install cost?
Cost depends on the property size, fixture count, trench distance, and fixture quality. A focused path-lighting install of 8 to 12 brass fixtures with transformer and timer runs $2,800 to $4,800 including install. A full property design with path, accent, security, and entertainment lighting runs $7,500 to $25,000 depending on scope. Holiday infrastructure adds a few hundred to a few thousand. Site walks and quotes are free.
Figures shown are ranges only. Your actual cost depends on site conditions, scope, and current material pricing. We quote every job in writing before work begins.
Can the system be expanded later?
Yes: we size transformers with at least 20% headroom and design cable runs with future expansion in mind. Adding a fixture to an existing run usually takes 30 to 60 minutes and costs the fixture plus a small labor charge. If a major expansion is planned (entertainment area added, new garden bed lit), we may add a second transformer or pull a new run, which is still much cheaper than replacing the original system.
Do you do holiday lighting installation too?
We install the infrastructure (dedicated outlets, automated circuits, smart control) that makes holiday display easy for you to put up and take down each season. We don’t typically run the seasonal display itself, since most homeowners want to swap themes year to year. If you want a fully managed holiday lighting service, we can refer you to local installers who use the infrastructure we built.
Can landscape lighting integrate with my home’s smart system?
Yes. Low-voltage transformers can be controlled by smart relays or smart outlets that integrate with Lutron, HomeKit, Home Assistant, and other platforms. Vacation modes, dawn-dusk automation, and entertainment scenes that include outdoor lighting are all standard. See our smart home electrical page for platform integration details.
