An ERV system works by running two parallel air streams through a heat exchanger core. One stream exhausts stale air from high-moisture rooms like kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry areas. The other stream brings in fresh outdoor air through a HEPA filter and distributes it to bedrooms, living rooms, and offices. As the two streams pass through the exchanger, the outgoing air transfers its temperature and moisture to the incoming air without the two streams ever mixing.

    Ductwork Installation

    Zehnder systems use proprietary small-diameter semi-rigid tubes that are easier to route through existing structures than traditional rectangular ductwork. Each supply and exhaust point gets its own dedicated tube run from the central ERV unit, creating a balanced star configuration. For new construction, tubes are installed during the rough-in phase before drywall. For retrofits, HOLISTIQ routes tubes through accessible ceiling and wall cavities with minimal disruption to finished surfaces.

    Unit Installation and Connection

    The Zehnder ERV unit installs in a utility room, basement, or attic space. Josh connects all supply and exhaust tubes to the unit, installs the fresh air intake and exhaust vent through the exterior wall, connects electrical power, and installs the control panel. Because Josh is a licensed electrician, all electrical connections are made to code without needing a separate electrician on site.

    Commissioning and Balancing

    After installation, HOLISTIQ commissions the system by measuring airflow at every supply and exhaust point, adjusting dampers to achieve balanced ventilation rates, verifying heat recovery efficiency, and testing all operating modes.
