When Electrical Can’t Wait

Most electrical work can wait a few days for a scheduled appointment. Some can’t. A storm-snapped service drop, half the house dark after a tree limb hits the line, a sparking outlet behind the couch, a panel that’s audibly buzzing and warm to the touch: those are situations where the right move is to call right now and get an actual electrician on site today, not next week.

HOLISTIQ Building Systems and Services LLC handles emergency electrical calls across Central Virginia for situations that involve safety, partial or full power loss, or weather damage. Josh Smith answers his own phone and dispatches based on what you describe. If it’s a fire or shock hazard we triage by phone (turn off this breaker, unplug that appliance) and arrive same-day. If it’s a power loss without active danger we typically arrive within a few hours during business hours or first thing the next morning.

What we don’t do is dispatch every call as a full-blown emergency. A breaker that won’t reset isn’t always an emergency; sometimes it’s a reset we can walk you through right there on the phone, no truck required. A flickering light isn’t always an emergency; sometimes it’s a loose neutral that can wait for a normally scheduled diagnostic, or a failing lamp driver that has nothing to do with the wiring in the wall. Calling us means an honest read of the situation, including telling you when something doesn’t actually need same-day work and can go on the schedule for next week.

Storm season in Central Virginia (severe thunderstorms in summer, ice storms and high winds in winter) brings a predictable cluster of emergency calls: tree-on-line, lightning damage, water infiltration into outdoor outlets, and partial power loss from utility-side issues. We coordinate with Appalachian Power and other utilities for service-drop and meter-base damage that requires utility involvement, and we handle the home-side repair after the utility restores power.

Emergency Electrical Situations

Storm and Tree Damage

Service drop pulled away from the house, mast bent or broken, meter base damaged, tree on the line. We coordinate with Appalachian Power for utility-side work and handle home-side repair: re-attaching the service entrance, replacing damaged meter bases, and rebuilding feed cables to the panel. Most storm calls run 2 to 6 hours plus utility coordination.

Sparking Outlets and Switches

An outlet or switch that sparks visibly or audibly when used is an active fire hazard and we treat it as same-day priority. Cause is usually a backstab connection that has loosened over years, a wire that’s pulled out of a wirenut, or arc damage at the breaker. We isolate the circuit, repair or replace the device, and inspect adjacent boxes on the same circuit.

Hot or Buzzing Panels

A panel that’s hot to the touch or audibly buzzing usually means a loose connection at the main lugs or a failing breaker. Same-day priority because the next failure point is often a fire. Thermal imaging confirms the hot spot, retorquing or replacement fixes it, and we recommend whether the panel needs full replacement or just the affected component.

Partial Power Loss

Half the house dark, certain outlets dead, half-voltage on the lights: usually a lost neutral somewhere between the utility transformer and the main panel. Same-day because lost-neutral situations can damage electronics from the over-voltage on the working side. We test, identify the failure point, and coordinate utility involvement if it’s on their side.

Water-Damaged Electrical

Burst pipes, flooding, and roof leaks reaching outlets or panels. Power needs to be off until we evaluate. We test for ground faults, dry out or replace water-affected components, retest, and document for insurance. We don’t restore power until the system is verified safe, even if the rest of your day is on hold.

Vehicle and Equipment Strikes

Car into a meter base, equipment into a service mast, contractor knocked the panel off the wall during a renovation. We coordinate with utility and insurance for the rebuild, install temporary power if needed for medical equipment or food preservation, and complete the repair in coordination with whatever else has to happen on the property.

Emergency Response Process

  1. 01

    Triage by Phone

When you call (603) 777-2596, Josh asks what you’re seeing, hearing, and smelling. If it’s an active danger we coach you through immediate steps to make the situation safe (kill the main breaker, unplug an appliance, leave the area). The phone triage usually takes 5 to 10 minutes and clarifies whether it’s truly same-day or whether a normal diagnostic visit is appropriate.

  2. 02

    Same-Day or Next-Morning Dispatch

Active hazards get same-day dispatch. Power loss without danger typically gets same-day during business hours or first-thing next-morning. We arrive with a stocked truck (common breakers, wirenuts, devices, meter bases) so most repairs happen in the same visit rather than requiring a follow-up trip for parts.

  3. 03

    Make Safe and Repair

First priority is making the situation safe: isolating the affected circuit, killing power to damaged equipment, securing exposed conductors. Then we repair if it’s a same-trip fix or restore temporary safe operation if the full repair requires utility involvement or special-order parts. We don’t leave you with a temporary fix that could fail dangerously.

  4. 04

    Document for Insurance and Records

Storm and water-damage calls get full photo documentation suitable for insurance claims, written description of what was damaged and what we replaced, and copies of any permits or inspection results. We coordinate with adjusters when needed. Insurance often pays a substantial portion of storm-damage electrical repair if it’s documented properly. Visit our gallery for examples.

Emergency Electrical FAQs

What counts as an electrical emergency?
Active hazards: sparking, burning smells, hot panels, exposed conductors, water reaching outlets or panels, tree-on-line. Power-loss situations that affect safety or essential systems: medical equipment, well pumps, refrigerators with food. If you’re not sure, call (603) 777-2596 and describe what you’re seeing; we’ll tell you whether it’s truly same-day or whether normal scheduling is appropriate. We don’t push for emergency dispatch when it isn’t warranted.
Do you charge a premium for emergency calls?
Same-day calls during business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM) are billed at standard service rates. After-hours, weekend, and overnight emergency dispatches carry a modest premium that we quote on the phone before dispatching. Storm-cluster events, where multiple homes need service, are handled in priority order based on safety; we don’t bid up pricing during storms.
Can you handle utility-side issues?
Service-drop, meter-base, and utility-side line work requires Appalachian Power or your local utility to disconnect service before we can work on the home-side equipment. We coordinate the utility call, perform the home-side rebuild, and coordinate the reconnection. Utility-side outages from upstream (transformer, regulator) are reported by us with documentation but repaired by the utility.
My power is partially out, half the house is dark. What should I do?
Partial power loss, where half the outlets work and the rest don’t, usually means a lost neutral. Voltage on the working half can swing high and damage electronics. Action: turn off all sensitive electronics (TVs, computers, audio equipment), turn off large appliances, and call (603) 777-2596. If you have a backup battery or generator, switch to it for the affected circuits if you can. Don’t try to reset breakers repeatedly: the over-voltage condition is the immediate concern, not the missing power.
Will insurance cover storm electrical damage?
Most homeowner policies cover storm and lightning damage to electrical systems with documentation. We provide photos, a written summary of what was damaged, copies of any permits, and itemized invoices that adjusters generally accept. Some upgrades, like moving to a larger service or adding surge protection during the rebuild, may not be fully covered; we’ll flag those distinctions during the work so there are no insurance surprises later.
What can I do to prevent future emergencies?
Three biggest reductions in emergency calls come from: whole-house surge protection (cuts lightning and utility-spike damage by 80%+), proactive panel retorque and thermal-imaging maintenance (catches loose connections before they fail), and a backup-battery or generator system for storm-prone properties. See our surge protection and backup battery installation pages for details.
