The Standby Unit You Own Is Not the Same as One That Will Start
A machine that idles for a few minutes every week has proven it can idle. It has not proven it can pick up a house. Batteries, fuel, and transfer gear all age quietly, and a seasonal property gives none of them the casual attention a lived-in house does.
Ask an owner whether their backup equipment works and the answer is usually confident. It runs on Tuesdays. They have heard it. Something out there hums for a few minutes and then goes quiet again, and that sound has been reassuring for years.
The trouble is what that exercise cycle actually demonstrates. It shows the engine turns over and the controller is awake. It says nothing about whether the machine can carry the building it was bought for, and that gap is where most backup failures live.
The Difference Between Running and Carrying
A weekly exercise is a self-check, and a useful one. The controller wakes the engine, runs it briefly to circulate oil and keep the internals from sitting dry, and shuts it down. Nothing is asked of it beyond turning over.
An actual outage asks something entirely different. The transfer gear has to sense the utility dropping, signal a start, wait for the machine to come up to speed and voltage, and then throw the building across. Immediately after that moment, everything in the house that was running before the lights went out tries to start again more or less at once.
That instant is the real test, and it exercises components the weekly cycle never touches. The transfer mechanism has to physically move. The engine has to accept a step load rather than idle unloaded. The governor has to hold frequency while a motor pulls its starting current. A machine can pass its exercise cycle for two straight years and still fail the first time any of that is genuinely required.
Batteries Do Not Care That the House Was Empty
The single most common reason a standby unit sits silent through an outage is a battery that could no longer turn the engine over. It is unglamorous and it accounts for a remarkable share of failures.
Batteries age on a calendar rather than on use. Three or four years in, capacity has faded whether the machine ran fifty times or five, and the fade is invisible from outside. Voltage measured at rest looks entirely normal on a battery that will collapse the instant a starter asks it for real current. That is exactly why a load test exists and why reading voltage alone tells you almost nothing.
Around this water, terminals get an additional problem. Humidity that never really lets up encourages corrosion at the posts, and corrosion adds resistance right where the highest current in the whole system passes. A battery with genuine capacity behind a poor connection performs exactly like a dead one on the morning it matters.
Fuel Is a Standing Question, Not a Settled One
Propane is the practical fuel on this shoreline, since gas at the street is uncommon out here. It stores well, which is one of its virtues and also the reason it gets forgotten.
The arithmetic worth doing is simple and rarely done. How many days do you want the house carried, and does the tank on your property actually hold that much? A tank sized for a cooking range and a water heater will not carry a whole building for three days, and the number of days matters here because outages after a storm crossing open water are measured in days rather than hours often enough to plan for.
Then there is the gauge, which is worth having in a form you can read from wherever you live. An owner three hours away has no way of knowing that the tank drew down during a February cold snap unless something tells them. Checking a level remotely takes ten seconds and removes the possibility of discovering the number during the outage it was supposed to cover.
What an Honest Annual Visit Includes
Oil and filter, air filter, spark plugs, and a genuine inspection of the enclosure and the pad. That much is standard and every reputable service does it. The parts that separate a real service from a checklist come after.
A load bank test or a controlled utility interruption, so the machine is asked to carry actual current rather than idle. A battery tested under load rather than measured at rest. The transfer mechanism operated and observed, both directions, with attention to how long the changeover takes and whether it hesitates. Every connection at the machine checked for the corrosion that lake air produces faster than the manuals assume.
You should also get told what the controller has been logging. Modern equipment records its own history, including faults that cleared on their own and starts that took longer than they should have. Those entries are early warnings, and reading them costs nothing beyond the willingness to look.
Scheduling It on a House Nobody Watches
At a lived-in property, maintenance gets prompted by noticing. Somebody hears the machine run rough, or spots a warning light, or simply registers that a year has gone by. A property people visit occasionally supplies none of those prompts, so the service has to be on a calendar rather than left to observation.

The timing that makes the most sense is fall, before the season when this equipment gets asked to work. A machine serviced in October is proven going into the months when storms cross the water and take lines down with them. A machine serviced in May has just missed the entire period it existed for.
Questions About Keeping It Ready
It ran fine on Tuesday. Is that not enough?
It is genuinely good news and it is not proof. The exercise cycle demonstrates the engine turns and the controller is alive. It does not move the transfer gear, does not put current through the machine, and does not test a battery the way a real start does. Those are the parts that fail.
How often does the battery need replacing?
Plan on every three to four years and test annually regardless. Capacity fades on a schedule that has little to do with how often the machine ran, and a resting voltage reading will look reassuring right up until the starter asks for real current. Around water, add corrosion at the terminals to the list of things worth looking at.
Can you service a unit somebody else installed?
Yes, and it is a common first call. We go through the machine, the transfer gear and the connections, then tell you plainly what condition it is in. Sometimes the answer is that it has been well cared for and needs routine work. Sometimes something was never right from the start, and you hear that too.
The Short Version
Backup equipment is only worth what it does on the one morning it is needed, and that morning is a poor time to discover a tired battery or transfer gear nobody has operated in three years. Test it under load, on a schedule, and the machine stops being a hope and starts being a plan.
